WOODBURY is a large village and parish, near the estuary of the river Exe 7 miles from the City of Exeter in East Devon .It takes its name from a prehistoric earthwork known as Woodbury Castle which commands views of the Exe estuary and dominates the modern village and the area around it. The village lies in the centre of what is one of Devons largest parishes. Agriculture has always been the main industry. The parish church of St Swithins was rebuilt in 1409 but was restored (the historian WG Hoskins says ruinously) by Rev Fulford in the mid 19th century.
Some local information about the parish can be found at the Woodbury Common web site maintained by Jim Batten The excellent Woodbury Local History site is well worth a visit. WOODBURY is the head of a petty sessional division, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of East Budleigh, union of St. Thomas, county court district of Exeter, rural deanery of Aylesbeare and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. Where to find parish register transcripts and copiesThe best and most obvious place to view the Woodbury or Woodbury Salterton parish registers is the Devon Heritage Centre in Exeter where all the originals, microfilms and fiche are kept. It is not always possible to visit Exeter and so copies or indexes are the next best thing. Below are some sites where you can find and dates available.
