AYLESBEARE is a small village on the eastern declivity of the bold range of hills between the vales of the Exe and the Otter, eight miles east of Exeter.
The oldest building in the Parish is the Church, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It dates to the 13th Century. The Church has been rebuilt and restored many times – in the 14th Century, a major refurbishment in 1899 and a new roof in 2004. Substantially younger, the Village pub (currently known as The Aylesbeare Inn) is 400 years old. The chapelry of Newton Poppleford had its christenings and marriages separately listed in the Aylesbeare Registers from 1580, though it did not become a separate parish until 1896. |

Where to find parish register transcripts and copiesThe best and most obvious place to view the Aylesbeare parish registers is the Devon Archives and Local Studies Centre in Exeter where all the originals, microfilms and fiche are kept. It is not always possible to visit Exeter and so copies or indexes are the next best thing. Below are some sites where you can find these with the date ranges.
