Lympstone is a pretty village, with several large and handsome houses, is pleasantly seated on the eastern bank of the broad estuary of the river Exe, about 2 miles N. by W. of Exmouth, and 8 miles S.S.E. of Exeter.
The village as we know it today has been formed from the amalgamations and permutations of three small Domesday manors, Leveneston (Lympstone), Notteswille (Nutwell) and (almost certainly a Domesday manor) Sowden. Over the last hundred years it has been thought of as Upper Lympstone (from near the Exeter main road up through the farms to the Common), Lower Lympstone, and Sowden. It was once a very considerable fishing station, having about 60 small fishing boats, and large beds of oysters in the estuary, brought there to fatten, from the sea coast near Exmouth. The parish church is the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary ( St Mary) To discover more about Lympstone history go to Lympstone Parish Council site Or Lympstone history Society |

Where to find parish register transcripts and copiesThe best and most obvious place to view the Lympstone parish registers is the Devon Heritage Centre in Exeter where all the originals, microfilms and fiche are kept. It is not always possible to visit Exeter and so copies or indexes are the next best thing. Below are some sites where you can find these with the date ranges.
