Clyst St. George, a scattered village and parish, 1½ miles E by N. of Topsham, and 4 miles S.E. of Exeter and is the most southerly of six parishes named after the River Clyst. The parish formerly contained Marsh Barton,[2] now the site of an industrial estate within the Exeter City Council area.
The church, St George has a red sandstone tower was completely rebuilt in 1854–59 and gutted by fire in an air raid in 1940, and again rebuilt in 1952. The Old Rectory dates from the 18th century.[4] Also known as Clyst Wick. |

John Gibbs remarks in the foreword that "there is a great disproportion of the Marriages to Births and Burials which is occasioned by this Church having been much frequented for weddings the last 40 years by people from Exeter, Topsham, Woodbury, &c. It was also made use of by many Woodbury people for Baptisms during the Civial War."
